Home Visits

In the comfort of your home, at a mutually agreed upon time, Nourish Lactation Consulting (NLC) will provide you with a thorough breastfeeding assessment and create a personalized plan that works best for you and your family.

A typical visit is 1-1.5 hours in length and begins with a pre-natal/ post-natal/history, & conversation about your current breastfeeding challenges & goals. Baby is then weighed with a medela babyweigh scale enabling a pre and post feed weight to be accurately taken. Breastfeeding is observed and finally, discussion and a plan are put in place.

A thorough suck assessment is also performed on all babies during the initial home visit.

NLC provides home visits 7 days a week and is open on statutory holidays

Lactation Consultants are not covered in Canada under the majority of health benefit plans yet they are a vital part of the health care system. Lactation Consultants can be accessed through the public health system but demand far outweighs availability and access to this very important health care service is usually delayed. In many instances it’s too late for the mother baby dyad to successfully continue on their breastfeeding journey.

Breastfeeding is a matter of health protection and promotion. As a collective society Nourish Lactation Consulting believes it is our responsibility to be proactive informed decision makers when it comes to breastfeeding as opposed to reactive when a health deficit is discovered.  Breastfeeding initiation rates in Alberta are at 91% but by 6 months that rate drops to 26% (AHS 2015).

Health Canada recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, then introduction of iron rich solid foods with continued breastfeeding for 2 years and beyond. Breastfeeding is one of the most important things a new mother can do for her baby because it offers perfect, natural, specifically designed nutrition.

Breastfeeding provides many benefits to mother’s and babies. For babies, they have lowered rates of  SIDS, obesity, asthma, allergies GI, respiratory and ear infections. Babies have stronger immunity when breastfed because breast milk has antibodies especially designed to fight infections and help the immune system mature. Breast milk helps the brain and nervous system develop in a far superior way to commercially prepared formula and the infant gut microbiome is protected with breastmilk because it is constantly being fed with healthy organisms that aren’t actually digested by the baby.

Breastfeeding has numerous benefits for the mother including lowered risk of maternal diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and ovarian cancer and it helps to promote bonding and releases hormones that helps mother’s to feel relaxed. Breastfeeding is also environmentally friendly as there are no plastics or aluminums being discarded to fill up our landfills. It’s also the most cost effective way to feed your baby as formula can cost upwards of thousands of dollars per year!!!
